Credit Report Dispute - Getting Response

If you get rejected don't get frustrated or discouraged. You are dealing with bureaucrats. Stay calm and simply send your dispute letter again.

You can get several different responses described below and you need to respond to them differently as well. So keep on reading.

No response. If you have not heard back from the bureau within 52 days, it is safe to assume your letter was ignored. Write another stronger worded letter. Mention that your first letter was ignored. Include the certified mail number for the original dispute letter.

Letter demanding more information. Write another stronger letter but simply restate what you said in the first one. Include any additional information requested.

Rejection based on the timing of the dispute.  Supposedly you have to wait around 3 months to resubmit the dispute or get a near automatic rejection. I successfully negotiated few things for my clients doing just the opposite. I would sent the second exactly same letter within 30 - 40 days and get the desired results. Regardless, if you do get rejected on the timing grounds, simply send another dispute letter just like the first, and insist on immediate action. Just wait for 90 days this time.

Rejection stating the dispute is "frivolous or irrelevant." Write  another letter, more insistent and threatening than the first, and include additional information if you have any to substantiate your claim.

Rejection on the grounds that you are manipulating the system. Send  follow-up letter to credit reporting agency stating that their responsibility is to conduct an investigation, period. You are not asking for the moon, only to correct mistakes on your credit report.

Letter confirming an investigation has begun. TransUnion does this just to extend their 30-day investigation period. It specifies the date by which you can expect the investigation result. All you can do is keep this letter and wait. If you don't get dispute resolved either way by the date specified, write a strong letter mentioning the delay.

New credit report showing the results of an investigation. That was the whole idea, right? Make copy or copies and check for all the additions, deletions, changes against your old report. Make sure everything is the way you described in your original letter.

See checking the fruits of your credit dispute.
